A$AP Rocky

A$AP Rocky

For the past few weeks, my Twitter timeline, Facebook news feed, and Tumblr dashboard have been filled with pictures, status updates, tweets, links, and videos of Harlem, NY rapper A$AP Rocky. Well a few days ago, I decided to treat my curiosity and see what the buzz is about him. A few days ago, the rapper had an interview with Spinner and spoke about the controversial topic of homophobia in hip-hop.

Read a few excerpts of the interview below and click here to read it in its entirety:

“I don’t give a fuck about your business, man, if you’re gay we can be friends. If you’re straight, we can be friends. I really don’t give a fuck and I don’t think anyone should care about what another man’s preference is… unless he’s interested, if you know what I’m sayin’.”

“As long as you’re a great person and, aside from that, y’know, you don’t bother me and make me uncomfortable, then let’s be friends, dude. You don’t see people for being gay. People need to leave gay people the fuck alone. Like, who cares?”

“I’m not saying that hip-hop needs gay rappers or anything, but they need to stop being so close-minded because that will just cause the genre to fail. Look at pop. Pop doesn’t discriminate against people. Look at Lady Gaga, y’know what I mean? Who the fuck makes the rules for hip-hop? Who the fuck dictates who’s cool and who’s not? Fuck you.”

Though I haven’t really been able to get into his music yet, A$AP Rocky does have my respect. It seems that more rappers these days are moving past, well the past, and on to the future. At the end of the day, members of the LGBT community (my community) are responsible for MOST artists’ success. We’re the one’s buying the albums, spending the dollars for concerts, and expressing our support for various artists in assorted genres. A lot of artists, especially the Rap/Hip-Hop artists, are starting to see that. What a wonderful time we live in.

About Teonny Spears

I'm 21 and I've been blogging/vlogging for 7 years. Britney Spears is my favorite artist so be careful what you say about her around me lol. Spiders scare me, I'm quite random, controlling, manipulative, and materialistic. Pop/Electropop/Dance music is what you will most likely catch me listening to, but I do enjoy all types of music like, r&b, hip hop, and country. Follow me on Twitter at @teonnyspears.
