Drake Take Care album cover

'Take Care' available now for purchase

A few weeks ago, upon reading that Drake‘s Take Care would be pushed back and that making the album felt reminiscent to creating So Far Gone, our ears perked. Was that his way of saying that the highly anticipated sophomore album would be anything remotely close to his popular 2009 mixtape — unlike the follow-up debut album Thank Me Later? Would be this be album that ended questions of whether Drake made the right decision joining Lil’ Wayne and Young Money?

“Headlines,” the album’s first single didn’t exactly answer these questions but the Canadian rapper uses the track to acknowledge irritated fans who’ve been around since early works Comeback Season and Room For Improvement. Enlisting an impressive mix of featured artists including Stevie Wonder, Andre 3000, Rick Ross, Rihanna and The Weeknd, Take Care makes it hard for even naysayers to be disappointed. Not one track sounds the same, not one track makes us slump in frustration from mediocrity but several make us think of what we loved about So Far Gone and nod. However anyone expecting anything different on Take Care than Drake‘s previous albums should look elsewhere.

It’s not all that easy to pick out one favorite track, instead a few might come to mind: The album’s opening “Over My Dead Body” features the vocals of fellow Canadian artist Chantal Kreviazuk and samples ESG‘s “Swangin’ n Bangin.” ”Crew Love,” “Take Care,” “Marvin’s Room,” “Make Me Proud,” and “Doing It Wrong” are also bang-worthy tracks. Kendrick Lamar on “Buried Alive” might run a little too close to KiD CuDi‘s style and “Practice” being a rework of Juvenile‘s 1999 hit “Back That Ass Up” is hilarious and uncomfortable at first but not bad. For “Look What You’ve Done,” Drake gets extremely personal with past family issues on a beautifully heartfelt track that tributes his mother and uncle who passed this Summer. We’ve provided a stream of “Crew Love” ft The Weeknd below.

Thanks, Drake. Happy Birthday and Take Care.
